….from Dr. Joseph J. Cutri of Winston -Salem in today’s Journal:

After the Roosevelt-Truman era, the Republicans gave us a variety of underperformers. First there was the popular but war-weary general, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had a heart attack and a stroke while in office.

Their next “gift” was a paranoid, Richard Nixon, who left office in disgrace.

In 1980, they elected the oldest candidate for president in our history, Ronald Reagan. Their amiable actor was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He had trouble staying awake during Cabinet meetings.

In 2000, we were presented with George W. Bush, a recovering alcoholic who thought Jesus had chosen him to lead our country.

In their grand tradition, Republicans are again about to nominate a geriatric patient, Sen. John McCain, who has been treated for a malignant skin cancer of the face. He finished fifth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy and admits that he doesn’t understand economics!

What historian can explain how the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt has deteriorated to this level of impaired incompetence?

And the 2008 candidate who will return a standard of competence to the White House is…….? Not Hillary Clinton, said Spike Lee at WSSU last night.
