The Franklin Press reports,

The Macon County Board of Education passed a resolution at a special called meeting on Monday authorizing its lawyers to intervene in a petition filed by Highlands resident Sabrina Hawkins and the Save Our Summers-North Carolina group to prevent Macon County from beginning classes on Aug. 4.

The State Board of Education granted Macon County Schools a waiver to begin classes before August 25, the statutory school start date.  The Save Our Summers folks do not believe that the State Board of Education has the authority to do so.

The NC General Assembly needs to put this issue to rest.   Our state is one of the few that have a restrictive school calendar statute.  Let’s ditch the statute and allow public school districts throughout North Carolina to establish their own school calendar.
