The combined acts of shouting down and hounding out an invited guest speaker, including the destruction of campus property — these illegal acts of mob tyranny by students, graduate students, and at least one professor — was a far, far, far, far greater offense and embarrassment to the UNC system and the particular university than was the legal act of a couple of students scribbling of an offensive graffito on a particular campus property designated as a “Free Expression” tunnel ever was or could be made to sound.

UNC leaders took the latter as flimsy justification to set up a study commission to attempt to write speech codes and so forth for the whole system. What will you do now, UNC?

My guess is, UNC will do nothing but clam up and hope people forget about it — and that the media will help. Meanwhile, UNC activists are still trying to disinvite former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey as the law school’s commencement speaker. Tell us, UNC: where is your pride in fighting down the Speaker Ban Law now?
