Nobody seconded a motion by Jackson County Commissioner Mark Jones to allow the sheriff’s office to pursue a federal COPS grant. If awarded, the federal government would give the county $34,165.83 the first year per officer, and I’m too lazy to beg an attrition schedule off somebody. The county would have to pay a match of $11,388.61 per officer per year. It was all for children, if I need to say so.
In order to get approval from those who didn’t believe the county could afford it, Major Shannon Queen argued first that getting the grant would not obligate the county to hire anybody, and secondly, that he didn’t think the county would get the money anyway. It was one of those things where they just kind of wanted a signature on a worthless piece of paper to spiff it up a bit.
