Privatization is good because it subjects services to market forces, like trade and competition. I’m not sure an article in the Smoky Mountain News makes the case.
Canton and Waynesville faced higher costs for handling garbage upon the closing of a transfer station. Canton decided to “privatize” operations to avoid investing in rolling stock. It will still payroll the employees. The article says municipal costs will go down, but it is unclear about how the contractor intends to deal with added costs.
The town of Waynesville had briefly considered contracting out its solid waste operations as well but decided to continue hauling its own waste based on an analysis done with the help of Land-of-Sky Regional Council, a government planning and development organization in Asheville.
