Or at the very least, undercuts the city attorney?
Steve Harrison reports that “three elected officials” confirm that the city of Charlotte intends to pay $225,000 to two of the victims of former CMPD officer Marcus Jackson. City Attorney Mac McCarley wanted to keep the settlement amount secret until other victims of Jackson had been paid off as well. But from the description it would seem that Mayor Anthony Foxx did not agree.
“Elected officials” describes both city council members and the mayor — and unless we jump to non-city elected officials who would have no authority to negotiate on behalf of the city, it is logical to deduce that Mayor Foxx is one of the three sources.
As for the settlement number, it is admittedly very hard to put a value on such things, but it seems a little high to me given what we know about Jackson’s actions in this particular instance. I thought the victims would go for closer to $50K each than $100K each.
Live and learn.
