I stopped by the McDonald’s on Hillsborough Road in Durham last night to try the new double fish sandwich I’ve been hearing about. Not a soul was in the place, which was strange because this is the McDonald’s I used to take the kids to back when they were of Kids Meal age, and it was usually pretty crowded.
My wife and I got our food and decided to eat it there. We sat down and within 20 seconds a panhandler comes in from the rear exit door by the bathrooms and asks for change. I shoo him away, which is my policy (don’t enable them!). Then, a couple of minutes later, another guy comes up and says he needs to get to the soup kitchen downtown. I tell him I’m not going that way and he says he doesn’t want a ride, just money so he can get there and stay for the night. Sure. We picked up what remained of our food and left.
I think it’s pretty clear why no one goes into that McDonald’s anymore.
