Maybe I’ve missed something or maybe MNI is waiting to see if the Tar Heels make the championship series, but relying on the AP, stringers, and the Heel players themselves to cover the College World Series seems a profoundly odd thing to do.
Practically the entire roster is from North Carolina, several from Charlotte. Given the lull in the sports year with the NBA and the NHL done, the CWS is the national sports story right now. On the other hand, no other daily in the state seems to have sent reporters out to cover the Heels, either.
But it is MNI which keeps Ron Green Jr. around expressly to criss-cross the country covering golf tourneys with no local tie-ins. I don’t get it. Unless.
Unless the paltry 25 column inches of golf-related display ads adjacent to Green’s copious U.S. Open ramblings bigfoot all other considerations. If so, how sad. I think Sallie Saxton got a much better return out of her girls than that.
