hhInteresting rumor du jour is that Mayor Pat McCrory will have a press conference next week in Jamestown, NC.

Why Jamestown — near High Point — of all places? McCrory went to Ragsdale High in Jamestown, where he kicked off his political career by being student body president. Kinda sounds like a set-piece to announce a run for governor, does it not?

The other interesting development is that current GOP candidate for governor Bill Graham has severed ties with consultants Fetzer Stephens. Everything is being couched as a friendly separation between the Salisbury lawyer and the firm which helped him manage the start of his campaign. And that may well be true.

However, it also leaves Fetzer Stephens unattached in the race at the moment. And it must be noted that firm principal Tom Fetzer, the former GOP mayor of Raleigh, would be uniquely qualified to help a McCrory campaign construct the statewide “urban” campaign everyone keeps talking about.

So, does 2+2=4? Guess we’ll find out next week.

Update: NnR poli-maven Mark Binker makes the point that McCrory announcing in the Triad helps get the “Charlotte patina off him.” And we all know how stubborn that stain can be. I had not thought of that.
