As you know, I just love these double-super-secret code names economic developers assign to companies seeking incentives in order to locate in a particular area. Turns out code name ‘Deacon’ rumored to be pondering a ‘major data center’ in Alamance County — is none other than Microsoft.

No figures are being tossed around yet, but passage of a state Senate bill offering tax credits for data centers is deemed crucial by none other than Sen. David Hoyle, who (ironically) has led the fight against public broadband. As of now, the bill is lingering in the House along with Hoyle’s bill putting a moratorium on public broadband.

As for code name ‘Deacon,’ Alamance commission chairwoman Linda Massey says she’s worried that Microsoft “may not come now because someone has let the secret out. If they can’t trust us, it really puts a bad taste in their mouth.”

Give me a break. Looks like Microsoft is playing North Carolina and Virginia off one another. Trust runs only as deep as their respective pocket books.
