*Mecklenburg County and several northern towns continue with the utterly bizarre pursuit of a cable franchise. What year is it?

This is an $80 million boondoggle waiting to happen and appears to be — as ever — 100% bi-partisan and non-controversial to those doing the boondoggling. *The Uptown Center City Partners push for baseball is so cute and rah-rah you almost hate to say anything. Kinda like kids setting up a lemonade stand and being giddy that they “made” 55 cents. Nevermind that $20 it took to build and supply the stand.

They are just so damn happy!

Anyway, does the Uptown crowd understand that the phrase “bring baseball back” makes no sense? Uptown never had baseball before — Crockett Park was essentially a suburban park, that’s what made it so unique. And the reason it was able to be a suburban park is that the Os were not a Triple A franchise with all the financial and infrastructure requirements that carries.

As we’ve said repeatedly, the AAA Knights do not make a lot of sense for the Charlotte market, no matter where they play. They are a vestige of George Shinn’s play for a major league franchise. Perhaps a A or AA team playing in one of the counties current burbs might make sense. But as long as Uptown is fixated on a tax-free stadium for Tim Newman’s former boss — well…
