They have a new toll road up in Raleigh. And, it seems, the N.C. Turnpike Authority is pretty, er, aggressive in trying to collect even small amount — think less than a dollar — from drivers who use it. Several state legislators think the N.C. Turnpike Authority’s billing policies are a bit nuts and are “suggesting” that it not send out bills until drivers rack up $5 in tolls. The Raleigh News & Observer provides more details of what’s going on. A highlight:

“It seems an economic waste for y’all to mail it,” [Rep. Paul] Stam, an Apex Republican, said Tuesday to Raleigh lawyer Perry Safran, vice chairman of the Turnpike Authority. “It’s bound to cost a dollar to mail a bill, 45 cents to mail it back, plus the person’s time.”
