The public school system is cutting $80 million from its $1.2 billion operating budget. That means cutting loose about 10 percent of the system’s 9300 certified positions.

CMS has a $1.2 billion proposed budget for next year and 10,629 proposed teaching positions. Like San Diego, it has roughly 135,000 students, but San Diego only has 15,000 full-time employees compared to CMS’ 18,000. CMS has 172 schools, San Diego has 186 plus 35 charter schools.

What am I missing here? No wonder Pete Gorman came East. We manifestly do not much care how our education dollars are spent.
