Students of the Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute in Jamestown recently went to prom.
The school is named for, and was founded by, Sgt. Alvin York the WWI Medal of Honor winner portrayed by Gary Cooper in the 1941 movie Sergeant York.
The North Carolina connection? York was originally assigned to the 82nd Infantry Division. In 1942 that unit became the first U.S. airborne division and was renamed the 82nd Airborne Division.
And the best part? Folks in Jamestown would doubtless laugh their heads off if they knew what the taxpayers of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County put up with.
