High-end estimate to renovate the downtown Benton Convention Center is $23.9 million.
Should the powers that be decide to go for it, City Manager Lee Garrity says it will take a bond referendum. Mind you renovating Benton is only part of “about $400 million in potential capital improvement projects” W-S would ponder.
And as the powers that be tout the economic development opportunities a renovated convention center would take, we need only look down I-85 in Charlotte where —of all people — the UPoR ‘pretty much demolished this line of reasoning,” exposing the reality that ” that the economic impact of the convention center is vastly overstated and likely negative….”
