The N&R (unpublished) reports “it’s the prospect of the Triad going after an automaker that has people buzzing.” But in order to do that, say Piedmont Triad Partnership CEO David Powell, North Carolina will need a “mega-incentives program so that we can compete.”

Part of that ‘mega-program’ is developing a ‘mega-site,’ a tract of 2,000 acres “that would be suitable for an aviation, auto or other large manufacturing operation.” The other key component is “securing and developing land west of Piedmont Triad International Airport for aviation tenants.”

What struck me when reading this article is this is the same thing Triad leaders have been saying for at least a decade now. Whether or not this strategy will eventually pay off in a big way remains to be seen — it hasn’t so far. But the mindset stubbornly remains the same —- dangling millions in taxpayers’ money.
