Looks like US Airways attempts to consolidate to its core strengths may kick up some extra moving pieces. Mesa Air Group filed for Chapter 11 today. Who, you ask, is Mesa Air Group? They’re a regional airline that does some of its flying under the US Airways Express brand. This includes US Airways’ Phoenix 50-seat regional jet and 37-seat prop operations. And much more importantly, a bunch of 86-seat CRJ-900 jets that make up nearly 10 percent of US Airways/US Airways Express flights from CLT.
Even if Mesa survives Chapter 11, it’s uncertain what the impact on its US Airways operations will be. As its contract with US Airways is up in any case on June 30, 2012, some sort of extension with less flying is one possibility. Maybe.
