Of course I read the story about Decker and gold mines in North Carolina. Not only does the story pertain to the corruption and utter lunacy of state government — and here I’m speaking of Decker’s position of gold mine researcher — but it also helps me find more background research on the Barringer mine in Stanly County (more to come on that, later).

After retrieving his number from the Division of Cultural Resources, I call up Decker. Low-and-behold, I find that it isn’t Decker who I am talking to when I call. Apparently, I learn, Decker does not have a number at the office in Raleigh. In fact, he doesn’t even WORK in the department. He works out of Asheville. The number, said the faux-Decker, is not available to DCR employees.

Hmmm?
