Raleigh is so desperate to develop Fayetteville Street, the city council is willing to pay $1 million for a restaurant on the street. This is the same city council that almost rejected a privately financed 42-story condominium and hotel tower in another section of the city. The subsidy almost makes Charlotte’s $5 million minor-league baseball investment look like a smart investment. It says something about the priorities in Raleigh that RBC Centura
will receive a total of $850,000 from the city and county to relocate
its headquarters, but a “white tablecloth” restaurant gets $1 million.

And people wonder why I don’t trust government to invest my money.
