The Jackson County Tourism Development Authority is in the throes of trying to decide whether or not they should hire an executive director. Oh, good. I have an opportunity to be helpful, because I know the answer:

Just don’t.

Tourism is fun, but this is no time for economic distortion. Why don’t you be pioneers, disband, and advertise that Jackson County has no room tax? If people will drive ten miles to save ten cents per gallon of gas, surely they’ll do the same to save $10 on a room. Besides, we have social media all over the place. Just be beautiful and meaningful, and let the tourists do the advertising. Then again, if you don’t push the low-wage tourism industry, something more valuable may find room to grow.

There. That feels good.
