My friend Roy recently reminded me that part of the allure of a blog is the ability for people to mix it up, to stir the pot so to speak.

My effort for the week is straightforward: Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln.

195 years and a day ago, in the hardscrabble frontier, Abraham Lincoln came into this world. And, I think we are better for it. (I’m willing to defend this proposition should the need arise.)

Perhaps in a less controversial vein, readers should check out “Hayek and the Common Law” in the new edition of the Cato Journal. (Still searching for a link.) Ronald Hamowy does a fine job explaining how a common law approach of discovering, not making law, is a bulwark against overly centralized and autocratic governments. He brings to the fore a noted economist’s views on how law affects freedom. Among the many gems, he says, “Like language, common law formed a spontaneously generated arrangement, the product of human action but not of human design.”
