I guess this N&R article lets you know how hard it is for newspapers to fill space on Monday morning.

Above the fold in today’s Local section:

EPA gives city ‘smart growth’ grant

The city of Greensboro is one of six communities nationwide picked for a federal grant to promote “smart growth” by reviving the center city and other nearby neighborhoods.

The Environmental Protection Agency selected the city as a winner among 66 other communities in 30 states .

“The redevelopment of Greensboro’s downtown will result in the preservation of open space,” said Geoff Anderson, director of the EPA Smart Growth Program . “Living in a compact neighborhood allows someone to walk to daily activities, thus reducing automobile use and related pollutants.

“Increasing development where it already exists limits the need to extend costly infrastructure out to newly developed parts of town,” he said.

……The grant will bring to town a team of smart-growth experts assembled by the EPA. City planners also might bring in more experts of their own choosing.

The grant isn’t monetary, but the EPA estimates it brings communities $45,000 in aid.

Yippee! And mind you, this is the EPA under the administration with the worst environmental record in history.
