Winston-Salem Journal reports.

PETA has filed a formal complaint with the federal government over Wake Forest University’s possible violation of the Animal Welfare Act:

“While we’re cheering for this monkey, who has gained independence from her captors just in time for the Fourth of July, Wake Forest’s ineptitude has led this monkey into a foreign environment that will be especially terrifying and dangerous as fireworks explode in the coming days,” said a PETA statement issued Tuesday.

The monkey apparently escaped from WFU on Friday, and Forsyth County Animal Control didn’t hear about it until Monday, when a resident reported a monkey in her back yard.

BTW, an animal control officer said this his first ‘monkey call’ in his 13 years on the force.
