As if we needed more.

From Arizona, an official state DOT analysis of ways to relieve congestion finds that HOT lanes are by far the cheapest option. The most expensive? That would be light rail.

Check the numbers:

HOT lane………………………………………………1.2 to 2.7 cents/person-mile
General Pupose lane………………………………..1.9 to 4.2 cents/person-mile
HOV/Bus Rapid Transit lane……………………….2.6 to 5.7 cents/person-mile
Exclusive BRT lane…………………………………..6.6 to 14.7 cents/person-mile
Light rail line………………………………………….16.1 to 35.8 cents/person-mile

Once again, one of the absolute horrors of focusing on train building as Charlotte’s primary response to traffic congestion is that we miss out on other, better solutions to traffic congestion.

And I’ll say it one more time, once a train is up and running to points north, to Davidson, I-77 will never see added highway capacity of any kind. Ever.
