The City of Asheville and Buncombe County want to accept $2,562,954 from the FAA for a fire station at the airport. The new objective is to help put out airplane fires, but the conversations leading up to the decision to build a fire station spoke more about coverage for the south end of the city. The logic is that state and local governments exist first to balance their budgets, and $2.5 million is invisible in a $13 trillion deficit, which pales in comparison to the nation’s unfunded liabilities.
