E-mail from Downtown Greenway LLC:
The Downtown Greenway seeks proposals for the second of 12 neighborhood benches to be commissioned for the Downtown Greenway. It will be located in the Phase 1A section of the trail, which runs between West Lee Street and Spring Garden Street along the east side of Freeman Mill Road in the southwest section of downtown Greensboro.
In celebration of the unique qualities of Greensboro, North Carolina and its citizens, we take this moment in the city’s Bicentennial Celebration to initiate the creation of the Downtown Greenway. The Downtown Greenway is a 4-mile multi-use paved pathway for walking, biking and running that will loop around downtown and will promote fitness, connectedness, and well-being for all of our residents and visitors in an aesthetically pleasing environment.
An artist designed and/or fabricated bench will represent each of the 12 different neighborhoods or areas that the Downtown Greenway route travels through. The artist will be asked to work with the community and its members to capture the essence of the neighborhood’s past, present and/or future.
Remember the benches along the first section of the greenway caused quite a stir.
