FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — July 2, 2014 —

Raleigh, N.C. – A bill signing ceremony for HB 712, Clarifying Changes/Special Ed. Scholarships, was held yesterday by Governor Pat McCrory at the State Capitol. This law makes clarifying changes to the Special Education Scholarships for Children with Disabilities. These changes will ensure smoother implementation for the 2014-15 school year.

“This critical legislation will provide children with disabilities and their parents the long awaited choice for high quality education to meet their special needs,” said Sen. Tamara Barringer (R-Wake).

Julia Adams and Jennifer Mahan commented that, “The Arc of North Carolina and the Autism Society of North Carolina greatly appreciate the leadership and dedication of Representative Paul Stam and Senator Tamara Barringer for their work on House Bill 712: Clarifying Changes/Special Education Scholarship. Students with disabilities and their parents are in need of choices to support their unique educational needs. This important legislation provides those options and provides clarity on how to access the scholarship program for their families. We are proud to have worked with Representative Stam for many years on this bipartisan legislation.”

Applications for the 2014-15 school year opened on May 1, 2014. For more information on the program, please go to: http://www.ncseaa.edu/CDSG.htm.
