After reading the article and Meacham’s editorial note, I wondered about the editorial process that led to Sharon Begley’s piece.
Below are three possible ways to approach the subject matter. Before reading the Newsweek piece, ask yourself which of the approaches would be most appropriate. After reading the piece, ask yourself which approach the magazine employed.
- Most people seem to accept this gloom-and-doom global warming argument. Why is there a vocal group of pretty smart people who spend a lot of time and money disputing the argument?
- There?s a scientific ?consensus? that global warming is going to lead to catastrophe. Still, some critics are successful in challenging that consensus. What?s wrong with the critics? arguments?
- There can be no dissent from the party line that global warming will cause massive calamities unless government forces us to change the way we live. In what ways can we most effectively impugn those who dare to dissent?
