State elections board chairman Larry Leake says more people might be called to take part in the campaign finance hearing launched this morning.

Leake already has ordered a new subpoena — covering Alexander “Sandy” Sands, the former legislator who has served as a lobbyist tied to the Womble Carlyle law firm.

Meanwhile, another Womble Carlyle attorney who represents a statewide group for optometrists raised questions about the process.

In response, Leake said: “If the counsel for Womble Carlyle believes that the statute might have been violated, then I’m a little puzzled as to why we have any concern that someone might be going to incriminate themselves.”
