The News & Observer is providing an update on what public officials in the three main Triangle counties (Wake, Durham, and Orange) are thinking about the potential for imposing a transit tax on residents. Wake seems to be in the clear for now, but the story says Durham and Orange officials still want to put the tax on the ballot later this year.

Light rail, of course, is folly for an area such as the Triangle, which has a suburban-urban lifestyle and low population density that doesn’t near what’s needed for rail to be successful and cost effective. Beefing up the bus system and making it more flexible and convenient is a much better option.
