In an interview with Charlotte’s Creative Loafing, JLF adjunct scholar Prof. David Hartgen illuminated readers on the issue of traffic congestion.  Stating the ineptitudes of mass transit to significantly reduce traffic congestion, David recommended widening existing highways as a cheaper and more efficient alternative.  Currently, Charlotte supports expanding mass transit, including light rail, instead of widening roads. The cost to do so is outrageous, no matter how you tweak the cost/benefit model.  But mass transit, surprisingly, isn’t all bad.  In fact, David recommends in the Herald-Sun adapting Durham’s mass transit system by either shrinking it after passing on more cost to the rider, or subsidizing all fares.
