I’ve said before, Republicans and Democrats want the same things. They just have different means to their ends. This morning, I thought of something – more specific than love, peace, and health – in which both parties could partner: the financial destruction of Asheville. A corollary would be urban sprawl. The Republican efforts toward this are well-known, beginning with the smart-alec, anti-Asheville bills introduced by former Representative Tim Moffitt, and continuing with all that Mountain Moral Mondays loved to protest, like anti-municipal sales tax redistributions. Democrats, on the other hand, don’t want any more building downtown. They would prefer parkland on prime real estate in the CBD. If one must develop, one must provide enough subsidized housing to build at a loss.
