Meet Vernon Davis. Arrested today by CMPD and charged with murder. While on probation for a August 2008 felony conviction for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Davis got 30 months probation for that conviction, according to state records.

Probation was granted despite a July 2007 misdemeanor conviction for assault and a July 2006 conviction for carrying a concealed weapon. In all, three convictions, one a violent felony, and exactly zero state prison time for Mr. Davis.

Plus Davis was booked into the Mecklenburg County jail multiple times — including on felony charges as recently as March — while on probation and was always given a reachable bond by Mecklenburg County judges.

Where are those blue helmets again?
