The City of Asheville has entered the realm of industrial regulation. The move was accomplished by way of concerns raised by environmental groups about the impact of coal leachate on the local habitat, combined with a long-term goal of transitioning to wind and solar power. A resolution to be approved Tuesday, though overreaching, at least requires Duke Energy Progress to:
. . . continue to meet the company’s obligation to provide affordable and reliable electricity to all customers 24-hour/day 7-days/week [sic., sic., sic.].
On the flipside:
The City of Asheville calls on Duke Energy Progress to partner with the City to help met its carbon reduction goals by decreasing its reliance on fossil fuels, including transitioning from coal to electricity provided by clean renewable energy sources.”
