This article sent me on a flight of fancy. It is one of those about the trouble the city is having with a backlog of permitting. Asheville’s current pileup is noteworthy with lots of beer industries needing paperwork processing and not enough bureaucrats to go around.

So, thought I. The obvious answer is we need to tax the people more so we can regulate them more. The only problem is, some people don’t like being regulated. Historically, local permitters have been faulted for contradicting each other and holding projects up needlessly. Allegedly, the problems have abated somewhat.

Regardless, since permitting is a service, a luxury few can afford, why don’t we create a sliding scale to let people buy the amount of regulation they want? You know why.
