I was interested to note that the annual homeschooling statistics released by the Division of Non Public Education on Friday has shown up in the news from New York to Orlando.

In the 2007-08 school year, there were 38,367 “home schools” (of no more than two families each) with an estimated enrollment of 71,566 students. Considering that the law only deals with those in the compulsory attendance ages (between 7 and 16), the actual number could be noticeably higher. Even so, nearly 4.5% of school-aged children in North Carolina are being taught at home.
