Math and reading results from the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress were released this morning.  NAEP assessments are administered to a representative sample of fourth- and eighth-grade students students in each state in odd-numbered years.

As far as North Carolina is concerned, there are no earth-shaking scores to report.  In fact, the 2013 scores were unchanged compared to 2011.

  • The fourth-grade mathematics score was 245 in 2011 and 2013.
  • The eighth-grade reading score was 286 in 2011 and 2013.
  • The fourth-grade reading score was 221 in 2011 and 222 in 2013, but the one-point increase was not statistically significant.
  • The eighth-grade reading score was 263 in 2011 and 265 in 2013, but the two-point increase was not statistically significant.

Among Southern states, only Tennessee and Florida had significant gains on NAEP tests.  Tennessee had significantly higher scores on all four tests.  Florida had gains on the eighth-grade math and reading tests.

I’ll have a few comments on the scores later today.
