The nation’s top-rated network morning television show will feature Monday an interview with Carolina Journal‘s managing editor.
The “Today” show sought Rick Henderson’s input for its lead segment on the federal criminal indictment of former U.S. senator and Democratic presidential contender John Edwards.
Henderson questioned the federal government’s decision to move forward with criminal charges. “What John Edwards did was sleazy and reprehensible, but it should not be treated as a crime,” Henderson said after recording the TV interview.”And how, exactly, is using money from others to cover up an affair and a love child a violation of campaign finance laws? This prosecution has ‘overreach’ written all over it.”
Henderson’s analysis for a national TV audience follows a syndicated Reuters story this weekend featuring JLF President John Hood’s reaction to the Edwards indictment.
“To act like a heel is not to be a criminal,” Hood said in the Reuters report. “We have to distinguish between Edwards’ disgusting behavior and allegations of criminality.”
A federal grand jury indicted Edwards Friday on six charges linked to cash gifts. Prosecutors contend Edwards used the money illegally to cover up an extramarital affair he conducted during his campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
Edwards says he broke no laws. A trial date is scheduled July 11.
“Today” airs at 7 a.m. on NBC.
