Donald van der Vaart, head of the NC Dept. of Environmental Quality, has issued a letter urging Pres. Barack Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency to beg off its shameless power-grabbing scheme of “midnight regulations” in the waning hours of the Obama administration.

Sec. van der Vaart’s DEQ is no stranger to protecting North Carolinians from an out-of-control EPA. Recall that DEQ lawyers Sam M. Hayes, Craig Bromby, and Andrew Norton represented the interests of North Carolinians before the U.S. Supreme Court, as North Carolina was one of 29 states that successfully petitioned the Supreme Court for an emergency stay of Obama’s capstone environmental measure, the Clean Power Plan (CPP).

The CPP was a rat’s nest of regulations that would dump $366 billion in regulatory costs, double-digit electricity rate increases, power plant shutdowns, and rolling blackouts on people just to buy a 0.018-degree (Celsius) reduction in temperature … by 2100.

Recall also that DEQ had to step in because of the void left by the state’s absentee Attorney General, Roy Cooper, who pointedly refused to protect the state from those costs.
