With the apparent passage of all three Amendments that appeared on the ballot yesterday, NC is now in contention with states like NY, CA, and FL for the “gimme” label. The fact that the Dems won big while still choosing George W. Bush as their presidential pick is evidence that the something-for-nothing fairy has been successful in NC. “To seem rather than to be” would be an appropriate turnaround on the current motto; no new thought there.
As a Yankee transplant myself, I note that the Democratic near-sweep in the state is a bad portent for things to come. The retirement-agers and retirees that will be amassing in NC in the coming years, both in-staters and definitely transplants, represent a huge potential constituency for Democrats, all with their hands out for freebies that the government is joyously promising.
With demographics in mind, it becomes even more clear that we need serious Social Security reform in the U.S., and soon. Government handouts play extremely well to gimme geezers (as well as those in the tax consumers category). I’m just thankful that all seniors haven’t been sucked into that mentality?yet.
We are playing cross-generational robbery with the youngest generation of working Americans, to try to fill a boundless demand for free goods and services for the aging. Time for big, big changes.
