In August, Carolina Journal’s Dan Way reported that the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) is asking school districts to use taxpayer money to fund a 501(c)(4) advocacy arm called the North Carolina School Boards Action Center.  So far, a handful of school districts, including Iredell-Statesville and New Hanover, have declined.

It is encouraging to see school boards stand up to the NCSBA, but the public school advocacy organization is not ready to throw in the towel just yet.

This month, the organization is holding eight district [regional] meetings.  In October, the NCSBA will sponsor a law conference and ethics workshop.  Their annual conference is in November.  I suspect that NC School Boards Association staff will use each of their events to place pressure on school board members who may be reluctant to throw money at the Action Center.
