This has been in the news for three days, and the dust isn’t settling. I first heard about the incident at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Chamber officer Laura Copeland had been at a youth meeting earlier that day when the incident broke out. She said all the kids from Asheville High were huddled together receiving the latest text messages from students in the lockdown. The kids were saying the fighting was gang-related. One would expect kids to fuel exciting rumors, just as one would expect school administrators to minimize any indications of threatening discipline problems. For similar reasons, I don’t like to discuss the latest controversies over politically-baited arrests. Taking sides when one hasn’t a clue what happened, as the saying goes, removes all doubt.

Well, today is my birthday and I will get back to my right to pursue happiness. (And few things could be happier than replacing the black in my apartment with lavendar and the Yale blue with ultramarine. Heavenly.)
