The North Carolina Charter School Association is a new organization “Committed to the Survival, Enhancement and Expansion of North Carolina Charter Schools by offering a platform for dialogue and empowered communication.”

The director of the NCCSA is Todd Havican, a charter school parent from Union County. Todd and a group of charter school supporters will attend today’s State Board of Education meeting to voice their opposition to proposed financial penalties that would be imposed on charter schools that do not meet state certification requirements. No such penalties have ever been imposed on district schools.

Update: Despite hundreds of emails and phone calls from charter school parents, staff, and supporters, the SBE’s Leadership for Innovation committee will pass along the policy to the full State Board of Education for a vote tomorrow. The committee refused to allow charter school supporters in the audience to comment on the policy. If you were wondering, the director of DPI’s Office of Charter Schools, Jack Moyer, fully supported the policy.
