Wow, that was quick. This is one hell of a development they’ve got planned for Guilford County Schools’ new headquarters, one that big-time developer John Kavanagh says is unlike any other “in the history of Greensboro.”

A new central administration building for school district personnel. Comprised of approximately 200,000 square feet, this single home for 500 school staffers will permit new efficiencies in school operations. School employees are now scattered in different buildings.

A fully accessible boardroom for the Board of Education and conference room facilities.

An estimated 60-70 residential units for mixed-income households that could be rental or for sale.

A parking deck for an estimated 550 vehicles. The deck would be nestled within the hillside of the site;

And a street-level community park atop the parking deck that would be accessible to the public as well as the residents and tenants of the surrounding structures.

Of course, it won’t cost taxpayers a dime. But if the school board debates CM-at risk vs. single prime on this project the way it does on schools, it could take to years to finish.

While I find it interesting that this went down three months after Mo Green took office, but I know how badly the city wants this property developed. Taxpayer reaction, especially during these times, should be very interesting. I also have to wonder how it’ll affect the bond and sales tax votes.
