The standard, government-endorsed strategy for fighting world poverty relies on government-to-government development aid. In other words, the federal government sends some of your tax dollars to regimes that run poor countries, even if those regimes deserve most of the blame for the conditions that lead to poverty.

A new program set to air on PBS next month will offer alternative ideas. (More details below.)

Economist William Easterly discussed global poverty earlier this year in an address at N.C. State University. In the video clip below, Easterly explains how entrepreneurs he calls ?searchers? do a better job than government agencies in fighting poverty.

Now, the Free To Choose Network is unveiling a new program targeting global poverty. Titled ?The Power Of The Poor,? the program ?explores the role property rights and legal institutions can play in economic development, as well as how global capitalism can help the world?s poor.? It features development economist Hernando de Soto.

The program airs Oct. 8 (10 p.m. Eastern Time is the earliest it will air, though you can check your local listings for alternate times) on PBS. Watch a three-minute preview below.
