In a lawsuit filed last month, Amazon fired back, accusing the state’s revenue department of trying to access private customer data. (Revenue Secretary Kenneth Lay says the state needs the information to calculate what it sees as Amazon’s liability; Amazon did not return calls for comment.) North Carolina, in turn, offered amnesty to other online retailers who sign on to start collecting taxes going forward. A few have agreed, but the state will still most likely lose out on about $160 million in Web-related taxes this year, according to a study published by the University of Tennessee.
