All you can do when reading something like this is shake your head and thank God innocent people weren’t killed:

What began as a celebration of Cory Brayboy’s birthday ended with his death after a car crash Tuesday night on University Parkway.

Brayboy died yesterday, his 18th birthday, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. His friend Roy Bernard Jones III, 21, died at the scene.

….Police said that speed “was a definite factor” in the crash and that they were still investigating and doing calculations to estimate how fast Jermaine Lee Wilkes, 21, was driving. All three people in the car were thrown out.

Wilkes was released yesterday from Wake Forest Baptist.

The three friends had been together earlier in the night, celebrating Wilkes’ release from jail and Brayboy’s birthday with other friends at Wilkes’ home on Manly Street. Manly is north of downtown, near the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Thurmond Street.

Wilkes had been serving 15 days in the Forsyth County Jail for violating the terms of his probation from a conviction for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

His mother, Joann Wilkes, said that the friends had been drinking as they celebrated and, when the party petered out, Wilkes, Brayboy and Jones went off to visit a relative of Jones’ who lives on the north side of town.
