OK, let’s ignore the whole question of why Congress wants to
regulate school lunches, the whole question of how worthless obesity
stats and BMI are, and the positive effects of having adequate calories
available for people to eat.

Let’s just consider what the food fascist at Durham Public Schools is considering as blanket rules. According to the N&O,
Nadine Blake, DPS school nutrition director wants to ban — well, just
about everything — Twinkies, cup cakes, chocolate chip cookies,
nachos, and hot dogs. Nothing like going to a high school football game
and having some celery sticks and a bottle of water.

Durham Public Schools may ban those confections with the pastel icing
that parents send for class birthday parties. Also on the potential hit
list: chocolate chip-infused sweets that students can cop for a quarter
at school bake sales.

“We don’t know how we’re going to do that, but if we’re going to be
looking at nutrition, it doesn’t need to be limited to the obvious,”
Blake said after the meeting. “It may very well be that we’ll make the
decision not to have cupcakes, or we may come up with the list of
recommendations for parents [who want to bring snacks to school.]”
