Here’s an example of technology used well. It’s called the “clicker” at UNC-Chapel Hill. No more sleeping through class, avoiding lectures, or doing other things while the professor is talking. As expected, some students don’t like the idea despite positive comments from the professors who use them.

But some students who have used the clickers said they have a downside. Freshman chemistry major Kelly Anderson said that at the end of the semester, her economics professor will grade students on several of their clicker responses.

“If you just happen to forget your clicker you might as well not go to class,” she said. “It’s as if you weren’t even there.”

Bingo.
