Yesterday, North Carolina New Schools, a nonprofit organization that specialized in developing early-college high schools, announced that they had closed.  Representatives of the group cited “cash flow problems that were directly related to growth and the speed of growth” as the reason.

The group has received tens of millions of dollars in grants throughout the years and there were no obvious signs of financial trouble.   It’s time to ask NC New Schools leaders Tony Habit and Angela Quick some tough questions.  There must be more to the story.

Anyway, in between draft picks* and against my better judgment, I decided to peruse social media for comments about the NC New Schools closure.  I noticed that some folks blamed Republicans for it.

One person responded, “NC gotta raise the salary of teachers somehow. Either that or raise taxes. It sucks”  Another wrote that this was “Another slap in the face for education.

Let’s be clear.  Neither the Republicans in the NC General Assembly nor Governor McCrory are responsible for this.  And there is nothing in the media coverage that I have read suggests they were.

*Round one of the NFL Draft was last night.  I love the draft but cannot explain why.  I am fairly pleased with the Steeler’s choice and hope they will draft a big body for the defensive line in round two.
